Radiation Safety
Radiation is used at UBC to perform valuable research, to diagnose and treat illnesses, for use in scientific instruments, and even in every day household products like smoke detectors.
The Radiation Safety Program oversees the safe use of radiation sources in research, teaching and the workplace at UBC.
Our services include:
- Licensing the use of radioactive materials
- Personnel monitoring
- Thermoluminescent dosimeters administration
- Thyroid monitoring
- Emergency response to radiation incidents
- Facility compliance inspections
The Radionuclide Safety and Methodology course provides an introduction to the safe handling of radioactive sources and is mandatory for all faculty, staff and students prior to commencing work with radioactive materials.
Radioactive sources are controlled in the workplace and pose little to no health risk to persons not directly working with them. If you encounter radiation in your workplace and have not received radiation safety training or you have any concerns about exposure, please contact us.
