Pets in the Workplace
The University recognizes the important role of pets in the lives of many faculty and staff. It is also acknowledged that some faculty and staff may have concerns regarding health (especially allergies), fear and safety concerning pets; especially in the workplace environment.
At a 2007 University Health and Safety Committee (UHSC) meeting, the committee recommended against a formal University policy regarding pets in the workplace. In consideration for the general well being, health and safety of all members of the campus community, the UHSC recommends against having pets in the workplace.
The exception to this recommendation is animals that are serving as guides or aides to their owners.
The UHSC advises this issue be dealt with on a case-by-case basis in the affected faculty, department and/or unit. Issues can be brought to the attention of your local health and safety committee.
