UBC Laboratory Chemical Safety Manual
The safe use, storage, handling, waste and emergency management of chemicals in the laboratory environment are the subject of the UBC Laboratory Chemical Safety Manual.
Chemicals are used, to one degree or another, in most university laboratories. The advent of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) in 1988 gave employees the legal right-to-know about the hazards of the materials used in the workplace and to receive the training necessary to use these materials safely.
Details on specific types of chemical hazards as well as commonly used equipment and procedures are outlined on the following pages.
