Asbestos Resources
Asbestos Safety Policy
UBC has adopted the acts and regulations of all provincial/federal regulatory agencies as the minimum standard by which asbestos is handled.
Building Operations, which is responsible for all University-controlled campus buildings, has its own Asbestos Safety Policy (PDF) to ensure that all Building Operations personnel are properly advised on methods of working safely on, and in proximity to ACM.
Building Operations Asbestos Work Procedures
The Risk Management Group in Building Operations has developed a set of safe work procedures for dealing with a variety of operations on the most common asbestos-containing building materials at UBC.
These procedures are designed for the sole use of Building Operations and IT Services personnel and are approved by WorkSafeBC. Contact our Asbestos Safety Coordinator for details.
BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
The BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations represent the minimum requirements for performing work safely in the province of British Columbia.
Sections 6.1 to 6.32 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations pertain to operations involving the use of asbestos or materials containing asbestos.
Safe Work Practices for Handling of Asbestos
WorkSafeBC has developed recommended procedures for handling asbestos in British Columbia which are outlined in the booklet Safe Work Practices for Handling Asbestos (PDF).
Asbestos Waste Disposal
Asbestos waste must be disposed of according to the Provincial Hazardous Waste Regulation. All asbestos waste must be disposed at a site approved by the BC Ministry of Environment.
