Building Results - June 2011

See below for detailed results of the UBC Vancouver campus drinking water sampling and testing performed in June 2011.

All but one drinking water sample and parameter found deviating from the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality in June 2011* are related to aesthetic objectives and have no health impact.

Note that after a 60-second flush of water, the water quality became normalized and test results were within the guidelines for copper. Water consumers need to flush water for one minute to ensure the freshest possible supply.

For certain buildings, the 60-second flush samples still deviated from the standard for temperature, pH, and aluminum; note that these are aesthetic parameters with no health implication.

Of the 26 samples (13 locations, tested twice each):

  • 13 locations showed temperature values above the recommended 15 degree aesthetic objective, but only 5 had elevated level after a 60-second flush of water.
  • 8 buildings showed pH levels slightly below the recommended aesthetic objective values, but only 5 had lower level after a 60-second flush of water; however, the pH was below the aesthetic objective in the source water received from Metro Vancouver as well.
  • 10 buildings showed aluminum concentrations exceeding the recommended aesthetic objective; however, the aluminum concentrations exceeded the aesthetic objective in the source water received from Metro Vancouver as well.
  • 7 buildings showed copper concentrations above the aesthetic objective value in the first flush sample.

(*) Note that samples for the Biological Sciences and Geography buildings were taken August 2011
