Fisher Scientific Fund
Congratulations to the Scientific Fisher Fund 2012 Winner!
The UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest (MKRF) received $5,000 of the Fisher Scientific Fund this year for the rehabilitation of old forestry research project sites and the clean-up of abandoned research installations at MKRF project. The MKRF is over 5,000 hectares in size, it was used for research for more than 50 years with more than 900 projects to date and an average of 100 active projects at all times. Unfortunately, many sites were left with considerable accumulation of debris and trash often abandoned in sensitive locations. In addition to mapping and clean-up of more than 30 forest contaminated sites, a new “Forest Researcher Use Policy” will be implemented that will require research to commit to clean operations and clean up fees of $500 per day for sites left contaminated at the end of research. Furthermore, graduate students will not get their thesis signed off until the research forest confirms that the project has been cleaned up.
Please check back in May 2012 for the next submission deadline.
